System adjustments after server replacement with transfer of the drives

Since the replacement server has a network card which has a different MAC address and might be connected differently depending on the motherboard, you might have to adapt the installed system so that it can be reached again after the replacement. In this case, you can access your configuration data via our Rescue System:

Hetzner Rescue-System

This applies to Linux distributions where udev uses a persistent rule (usually found in a file with the extension .rules in the directory /etc/udev/rules.d/) to assign the name using the MAC address. With these distributions, a new rule is created in the corresponding file due to the new MAC address and the number of the network card is increased by 1, i. e. eth0 becomes eth1. You can prevent this by correcting the MAC address in the appropriate rule by using our Rescue System. Alternatively, you could also change your network configuration to the new name of the interface.

For distributions that use predictable network interface names, the name of the interface is mostly derived from the port to which interface is connected. The network card is no longer called eth0, but for example enp3s0. In rare cases, e. g. if the replaced server has an alternative motherboard, changing the network configuration may also be necessary. Since our Rescue System still works with the classic designation eth0, you can find out the correct interface name e. g. with the below command and then change the name manually:

# udevadm test-builtin net_id /sys/class/net/eth0 | grep '^ID_NET_NAME_PATH'

Please note that, after a server replacement, there may be other operating system specific features of the network configuration which require changing. Please understand that we cannot provide support for such changes. However, we will be happy to help you when we can.
