Overview
This tutorial describes the migration of a generic Top Level Domain (.com/.net/.org/.info/.biz), in short gTLD, to Hetzner with the aid of Hetzner Domain Robot.
Basically this involves the following steps:
- Prepare migration with old provider
- Create contact handles (menu item "Handles")
- Create or configure nameservers (menu item "DNS Entries")
- Start ChProv (KK) order in Robot (menu item "Domains")
Prepare migration with old provider
The authcode for the domain needs to be requested from the old provider. This is a kind of password for the domain transfer and enables the authenticity of the person carrying out the domain transfer to be checked. Please ask the provider which forms are needed for this.
Furthermore, the domain should not be set as locked (eg. "clientTransferProhibited"), as this prevents any domain transfer. The old provider, and very often the customer also, can manually unlock the domain via web interface.
If you should have access to the zone entries for the currently listed nameservers: It is possibly worth, shortening the validity period of some entries or adjusting the host entries for mail and web servers etc. to the new circumstances before transferring.
Prepare CHProv (KK) order in the Robot
Create handles
First, if these are not available, handles (=contact addresses) for the owner (Holder), the administrative contact (Admin-c) and the technical contact (Tech-C) as well as the zone administrator (Zone-C) should be created.
Handles which already exist, having already been used in other domains, can and should be reused. If these are one and the same person/company, only one handle needs to be created.
Domains cannot be registered or migrated as long as the light (status display in the Robot) is still on "yellow". Handles are usually ready within a few minutes.
Please note: Separate handles need to be created in the Robot for each TLD. For .com domains, .com handles need to be created.
Create nameserver entries
Regardless of whether you wish to use Hetzner nameservers or your own nameservers, it is recommended that you create the corresponding nameserver entries before starting the CHProv order.
Further information is to be found in the article on Creating DNS Entries in the Hetzner Robot.
Should you wish to use own nameservers for the domain, these need to be registered via the Robot (menu item "DNS Entries" -> "Registered Nameservers").
Start CHProv (KK) order in the Robot
The CHProv (KK) order can be started in the Robot via the menu item "Domains" -> "New Domain". Only the domain name, handles for Holder, Admin-C, Tech-C and Zone-C are needed as well as the nameservers to be used in future for the domain.
CHProv (KK) order procedure
You can check the status of your domain transfer directly via the Robot web interface (menu item "Domains" -> Select "CHProv (KK) Orders" from the upper left dropdown menu -> Click on "Search").
The domain transfer of a gTLD domain is not performed until the current provider/Registrar has confirmed the transfer request. This must be done within five working days.
Domain transfer following the new registration of a gTLD domain is only possible 60 days after the registration date at the earliest.
Despite the domain transfer, web pages belonging to the old server continue to be shown
This is normal, as the nameservers in the Internet temporarily save cache entries for mailservers, webservers etc. until the validity period (TTL) has expired and so do not recognize the new data.
Furthermore, some providers ignore the given period of validity, migration should however be recognized by all nameservers between 3 and 5 days at the latest.
Migration of gTLD domains to an other provider
If gTLD domains are to be moved away from Hetzner to an other provider, the new provider only needs to be informed of the authcode. This can be called up directly from the Robot (menu item "Domains" -> Tab "Authcode")
After transfer has started with the new provider, with .com/.net domains it is possible to answer incoming transfer requests via the menu item "Domains" -> "CHProv (KK) Requests" with ("ACK" = Agreement, "NACK" = Denial of the transfer request).
Once transfer is complete, the domain is removed from the Robot.
