Overview

This tutorial describes the migration of an .at/.eu domain to Hetzner using the Hetzner Domain Robot.

Prepare migration with old provider

No particular preparation needs to be made regarding domain migration as far as the old provider is concerned, as approval for the migration of the domain is granted directly by the domain holder. However any services associated with the domain will need to be cancelled separately with the old provider.

Set up configuration in the Robot

Create handles

First handles for the Holder, Admin-C and Tech-C need to be created in the Robot, if these do not already exist in the Robot. If these are one and the same person, only one handle needs to be created.

For .eu domains only one holder handle is needed! A different email address needs to be used for this holderhandle, than the one lodged for the Registrant for Whois queries.

A Whois query is possible for .eu domains at www.eurid.eu.

Domains cannot be registered or migrated as long as the light (status display in the Robot) is still on "yellow". Handles are however usually created within a few minutes.

Please note: separate handles need to be created in the Robot for each TLD. So, .eu handles need to be used for .eu domains und .at handles need to be created and used for .at domains.

Creating nameserver entries

Regardless of whether you wish to use Hetzner nameservers or your own nameservers, it is recommended you create the corresponding name server entries before starting the CHProv (KK) order.

Further information can be found in the article on Creating DNS Entries in the Hetzner Robot.

Start CHProv (KK) order in Robot

The CHProv (KK) order can be started in the Robot via menu item "Domains" -> "New Domain". Only the domain name, handles for Holder, Admin-c and Tech-c are needed as well as the nameservers to be used in future for the domain.

Only one holder handle is necessary for .eu domains!

CHProv (KK) order procedure

.at Domains

After starting the CHProv (KK) order, the nic.at (= Registry for .at Domains) sends an email to the address given for the domain holder according to Whois records. The domain holder must then agree to the transfer of the domain.

If an email address has not been lodged for the domain holder, contact is made by post. In this event, agreement must also be given by post or fax. A download of the relevant template needed for this is provided by nic.at http://www.nic.at/service/faxbestaetigungen/.

Agreement must be given within 21 days of starting the CHProv (KK) order process.

.eu Domains

Eurid sends confirmation emails after the start of domain transfer to both the current address lodged with Whois for the domain holder, as well as to the address given on the CHProv (KK) order. Both emails must be confirmed to confirm the transfer.

In some cases, EURid requires a written confirmation by fax.

Agreement must be given within 14 days of starting the CHProv (KK) order procedure.

Despite the domain transfer, web pages belonging to the old server continue to be shown

This is normal, as the nameservers in the Internet save temporary cache entries for mailservers, webservers etc. until the validity period (TTL) has expired and so do not recognize the new data.

Furthermore, some providers ignore the given period of validity, migration should however be recognized by all nameservers between 3 and 5 days at the latest.

Migration away from Hetzner to an other provider

Please check before the start of the domain transfer that the email address for the domain owner is correct and if necessary amend this. As soon as the confirmation emails which have been sent by the Registry concerned have been confirmed, the domain will be migrated and then automatically deleted from the Robot. All services (eg. webspace packages or similar) need to be cancelled separately.
